-Presented with medal for his 16 months of contribution to the alliance as the CNFK
-ROK-US Alliance Friendship Association confers RDML Boyle with Korean name ‘Bowuhae’
Rear Admiral Michael E. Boyle was presented with the Order of National Merit ‘Cheon-su Medal’ by the Chief of Naval Operations, ROK Navy, ADM Sim Seung-seob in a ceremony at ROK Fleet on the 17th of April.
* Cheon-su Medal: As per the Republic of Korea national award guidance, it is the 3rd rank National
Order nominated and offered to the person who committed to the peace keeping of national
security with one’s distinguished effort. (Foreign diplomat, military service member, and civilian
who labored and contributed to the furtherance of national interest of Korea during one’s service.)
During his tenure, the Commander US Naval Forces Korea expanded the existing ROK-US combined department of ROK Fleet Command from a single branch to three, while putting his utmost effort building up the operational capability of the Republic of Korea Navy through exchanges and training in the field of anti-
submarine warfare, mine warfare, shipboard cyber protection and other various military realms.
Especially, through direct coordination with US 6th Fleet by RDML Boyle himself during the piracy incident of Korean fishing vessel in the Ghanaian waters in April 2018, he enabled the ROK Navy Cheong-hae Unit (ROKS Munmu the Great; 26th deployment) to conduct smooth rescue operations contributing to the protection of lives and property of Korean citizens. Also notably, his support put much energy to the success of 2018 International Fleet Review held by the ROK Navy.
Meanwhile during the awarding ceremony, the ROK-US Alliance Friendship Association bestowed a Korean name upon RDML Boyle. His new and Korean name ‘Bowuhae(보우해(保友海))’ means the ‘Protection of the Friendly Seas’ and it was given to him with appreciation of his effort securing the peace on the Korean
Peninsula through protection of surrounding seas of Korea. Moreover, it meant him to continue his endeavor to safeguard the global seas even after his return home.
“I am proud of the opportunity to contribute to the development of ROK-US Alliance for the last 16 months as the Commander US Naval Forces Korea” said Admiral Boyle, “The weekly discussions that I had with the ROK Fleet Command for the strengthening of combined cooperation process, and founding more active exchanges between the two forces are especially memorable.”
Boyle served as commander of US Naval Forces Korea since January 2018 and will be relieved by Rear Admiral(select) Michael Donelly on the coming 25th of this month. He will next assume command of Carrier Strike Group 12(USS Abraham Lincoln, CVN-72) from the 25th of April 2019. //fin.//
